    UNC Leo-4, Approaching Jovian System

The colonization vessel has been on its journey towards the Sri System for approximately a month. The Jovian System was one of its planned tightbeam exchanges as it was a hub of activity, even in the relative absence of UN, MCR, and Belter fleets. Most of its time in transit has been inconsequential and smooth sailing. All of its passengers and crew were still well alive, but this tightbeam was necessary to ensure safety before their departure to the outer gas giants.

The demilitarized Leonidas trudged through the Jovian system, its effective speed decreased by 4% because of drive issues. Gravity was still roughly 1g, however.

MCRN Aetius was part of the Jovian fleet, though most of its crew were validated for shore leave. MCRN Jovian Fleet Command relegated the vessel to radio exchanges for its voyage towards Mars for the time being.

MCRN Aetius - Quarters of Commodore George Flinders

First Officer John Kayne knocked on the door.

"Sir we have received our first tightbeam from the UNC Leo-4, you are needed on the bridge. We have been given their drive signature to confirm their identity, soon more details will follow.”

George sat up and came to the door, there was an air of reluctance to do so but orders are orders. The MCRN Aetius and her small flotilla had been in orbit around Jupiter for several days now. They had recently been patrolling shipping lanes from Jupiter to MCR owned ports and docks in the belt, protecting ships, arresting and destroying pirates, and performing mandatory random checks on freighters. Currently however her crew and the crew of her supporting ships were on shore leave taking some well-earned rest from their long deployment.

They were due to leave for Mars tomorrow but had been assigned to receive tightbeams from colony ships to ensure their safety. Not a hard job by any means, but it meant that George had little time off the ship, as he was the one to respond to the incoming messages. However despite this he was still able to spend more intimate time with his girlfriend: the Aetius’ navigation Officer Lieutenant Schmitt, something he wouldn’t do whilst on deployment, for fear of it getting in the way of their primary objectives.

The Leo-4 was their new exchange partner, it was a UN colony ship and the Aetius was tasked with obtaining information to confirm their identity and allow their passage, as well as ensuring that they were safe along the journey, colony ships were easy targets for pirates, and they were still very numerous, despite the efforts of the MCRN and UNN.

Lieutenant Kayne intruded; "Sir they are extremely far away, I imagine that the delay will be very long"

"Well then, we'll just have to sit tight and wait for their message. Oh and tell the crew to return, we leave tomorrow, and I want to make sure that the ships are in perfect condition for our voyage home" George responded.

The official complement casually milled about the bridge, the captain keeping a watchful eye for incoming and outgoing transmissions. Nothing of major importance has happened, and the long trip dulled the alertness of the crew by a good bit already.

Not everyone had dulled that much. Molidor still diligently worked on his station, trying to solve the drive issue. He also has made multiple visits to the reactors, tweaking specific discrepancies and fixing broken modules.

It seemed that the maintenance had piled up, as he had patched up and tweaked one of the reactors to its full capacity, but the effective speed of the ship was still underperforming.

Molidor received the ETA of the tightbeam message towards their exchange partner.

    “Three hours out, captain.”

    “Acknowledged.”

They would be entering the edge of the Jovian system in seven hours more than the tightbeam ETA.

The tightbeam read: MCRN Aetius, this is our tightbeam exchange; we are sending our flightpath, complement, purpose, and ship weapons. Requesting status of ring gates, over.

The command crew waited patiently for the tightbeam to come through.

"Sir tightbeam from the Leo-4 received. We have their flightpath, compliment, status and purpose ."

The Leo-4 was a demilitarised Leonidas class Battleship from the UNN turned into a colony ship destined for a planet through the ring gates. All that remained of her military days, were some PDCs, for self-defence purposes, as the tightbeam claimed.

"Leo-4 this is the MCRN Aetius, we have received your tightbeam. Currently, the ring gates are open and colony ships are being allowed through, it should be plain sailing from here on out. However, could we have a confirmation on your complement and final destination so we can confirm it with our databanks, and make sure that you are still on course? After all, we have been dealing with large numbers of pirates and terrorists, who see colony ships as easy pickings, we need to ensure your safety."

The tightbeam had sent, and now there was going to be a wait for the reply. There was a delay of 3 hours each way, and soon they would be returning to Mars, lengthening the delay with each meter they moved.

The command crew left the bridge and returned to their cabins, eager to enjoy what little time they had left stationary, yet the crew were already boarding, and going to their stations to prep the ship for departure.

    Molidor received the confirmation request.

"Sir, they're requesting confirmation of our complement."

    "Send it."

    "Yes sir."

Molidor then typed the confirmation and added this: "Can you please emphasize which pirates and terrorists are you guys dealing with?"

He then promptly sent the exchange.

    "Tightbeam delay by 57 minutes."

The MCRN Aetius had left Jupiter and was on its long voyage back home to Mars. The crew were tired, but the route was safe, they would hopefully meet up with another flotilla who would be their replacement in the Jovian system. In little over a month speed permitting they would be home.

Tightbeam received. Source; The Leo-4 Sir, we are still required to reply.”

“Well what does it say Lieutenant?”

“We have been given confirmation on their compliment, and updated delay time and they wish to know what pirates and terrorists we have been ‘dealing with”

“This is the MCRN Aetius, thank you for the confirmation and the updated delay time. However, we cannot inform you of the threats that we have been covering in the vicinity, due to its confidentiality, we have been ordered not to inform colony ships of the number, location or specifics about any of the pirates and/or terrorists that we have dealt with or have record of, I apologise if this poses any inconvenience to you, or your mission”

The tightbeam sent. The crew settled in for their long journey home. Some of them hadn’t seen the red sands of Mars in almost a year, it would be good to get back.

Sir? We’ve just received another tightbeam!?”

“Who from Lieutenant, it’s too early to be a reply from the Leo-4. Another message from them perhaps they sent after their first?”

“No sir, it’s from MCRN fleet command, how unusual, we’ve already got our orders”

“MCRN Aetius I am here to inform you that there has been a mutiny on our homeworld. I am ordering you to return to Jupiter and from there travel to the ring and join with the main fleet stationed there. You will inform them of the situation and form part of the Commanding team due to your rank. From here we shall rely on your good judgement, tactical knowhow, and skills of your peers to keep that fleet, and the Martian Dream alive. Good Luck, and fair sailing.”

Silence filled the bridge, the crew stared in shock at each other

Lieutenant Schmitt, a course change seems to be in order, inform the other ships” George said, with a large lump in his throat. Mars was his home, and he did now know when he would see it again.

"Acknowledged. Can you at least advice of the fastest and safest route to our destination?"

    Molidor then sent that away.

"Sir, they won't say. I've resorted to just getting the best route for time and safety."

    "Alright, sailor."

Molidor was uneasy. The PDCs on their vessel were uncoordinated and ineffective, at best. The UNN didn't think about optimizing the defense systems, and that may spell casualties for the colony ship.

The air aboard the Aetius was almost palpable. The crew were all proud Martians and could not conceive the idea that a mutiny had occurred on their own homeworld, but they were Martian Sailors; they had new orders and they would stick to them, but the Leo-4 could be in some danger and was heading the same direction, nothing said that they couldn’t rendezvous with them.

“Lieutenant Schmitt, a new course change is in order, I want to rendezvous with the Leo-4 in no more than 12 hours, I want a full burn, let’s ensure that our new friends don’t wind up in trouble with pirates.

“Yes sir, calculating the route now”

“Lieutenant Kanye I want another tightbeam sent to the Leo-4, I want them to be prepared for our arrival:”

“Leo-4 this is the MCRN Aetius. Due to a change in our orders, we are no longer returning to Mars. We are meeting with the Martian fleet stationed around the ring. Because of this, and knowing the locations that you are in we have decided that for the duration of the journey our flotilla will escort you till the ring, and dependant on further orders maybe even beyond. We recommend that you slow down, and DO NOT alter your course, as we will be burning hard and fast in an effort to meet you as quickly as we can safely manage.
Please leave this channel free as it will be unlikely we will be able to respond.
    Aetius out."

“This is Commodore George Flinders speaking, we are preparing to engage in extended duration High-G manoeuvres and I want everyone at their stations prepared for this in no more than 10 minutes, we shall be rendezvousing with the Leo-4 and you should all behave cordially, we are Martian, and they are our ally.”

He took his headphones off and spoke to the captain directly.

    "They'll be escorting us."

The captain sighed heavily, with a look of relief on his face. Then he nodded to Molidor

"Acknowledged, we appreciate the aid. I will be on this channel for the duration of my shift and will be leaving it open for the next operator."

UNC Leo-4 continued on its current course.

A short while later - MCRN Aetius is 10 mins from Leo-4

The MCRN Aetius was attempting to decelerate and avoid hitting the Leo-4 but the crew knew that it was tight. They had used an intercept course that was usually used by skiffs when they wanted to board, but this would bring them in close. The crew were tired the newer and lower ranks especially, who despite having spent over a year now on the Aetius during its long operational deployment, they were not used to this High-G stress on their body. Commodore Flinders was doing well, in fact, he believed that he had felt worse, the Marines were fine, they had indeed felt worse but they were MCR marines, the toughest and best soldiers in the solar system, hell the galaxy some of them believed.

The MCRN Aetius had slowed sufficiently to send another tightbeam to the Leo-4 to inform them of their imminent arrival.

"UNC Leo-4 this is the MCRN Aetius again. We are informing you that we are less than 10 minutes out from the rendezvous and upon arrival, I would like to have permission to come aboard so that we can share information and confirm routes and whatnot. If permission is granted I will bring my 1st officer and Navigation officer on board with me. I understand that you are UN colonists and have little protection, we hope to provide that, as well as some light company. We hope that we can work together well, and I look forward to meeting you in person.
    Aetius out."
