    "Arran, like whisky?"

She really did roll her eyes at that.

"Yes, Wierzbowski. Whisky. The kind that wins you favours."

He went silent again, although now he seemed to be thinking rather than vacant. It wasn't a bad look...

"Yes, ma'am. Uh, question: How exactly do we get you on board?"

Sophie thought for a second, biting her lip - that was actually a good question. Finally, she decided to open her box of tricks again. She slid out a set of Lance-Corporal's stripes, which she surreptitiously slapped onto his uniform - the nanofiber patch wove itself into his BDUs just as they were meant to. She authorized and issued a reposting of one LCpl Wierzbowski to the UNN Munroe by way of Luna Special Operations Command, then let the notification arrive in his inbox with a slight delay. She turned to him with the slightest hint of a mischievous smile.

"I don't know, Lance-Corporal. But if I were you, I'd not be late to meet your new CO."

The look on his face was almost worth everything she'd been through so far.

It wasn't that the Belter stuff was bad but the thought of it...coming from fungus. Then his mind flickered back to what himself, Fitzgerald, and the others all had back at the barracks. Maybe the Belters were right about some things then. Still it wasn't what he'd choose for his last drink. The idea of a proper Scotch whiskey all the way from Earth was enough to whet the appetite and keep him going.

He blinked as she slapped a set of stripes onto his uniform. A bit of techno wizardry and then his comm pinged to congratulate him on his promotion and remind him of his immediate reassignment to the UNN Munroe. "I-what" he was having a hard time processing it. What in Christ's name had she just done? What was this spook planning?

The marines on duty at the gangway were unfamiliar to him but they nodded as he approached. One was a lance jack himself so they weren't too worried about discipline. "What have you got here?" "Pr-Lance Corporal Wierzbowski, I'm reporting in to the Munroe with a prisoner" he said apologetically. "What level is your brig on?"

"We call them decks in the Fleet corp" the other NCO responded, his tone dry. "I'll paint it on your visor." The navmarker popped up and Krzy grunted. "What's she done?" "Eh, smuggler. Probably just due for interrogation for ONI" "I hear that, there's spooks all over this station. Some of them might even be on our side". That got a chuckle from the marines. Krzy nodded and tugged his charge along into the ship "Appreciate it. Make sure the freedom loving Belters don't storm the ship while we're gone".

He let out a sigh of relief as they got inside. "Now what?" he hissed at the officer he was 'escorting'.

    "Now what?"

Sophie was already digging into her pack, pulling them into an alcove while she did so. She pulled out a battered set of black-and-grey BDU uppers, devoid of markings except ONI patches at the shoulder. She unclipped her chest rig and thrust it at the bewildered marine - "Hold this." - and put the jacket on over her undersuit. She pulled her hair up into an elegant twist, then pulled out a patrol cap and tucked the rest of her hair away. She took the rig back from him, opening up one of the pouches to reveal a set of pistol mags, then clipped her pistol in its holster to her thigh. An earpiece went on, and she was ready.

"Sorted. Bridge is this way, Lance Corporal."

    "Spearfisher, Angler. Sitrep?"

"Angler, this is Spearfisher. Waiting for you here. Come on in."

Great, James wins again. Another beer owed.

The guards at the door to the bridge gawked even less subtly than Wierzbowski had at first, but eventually one recovered sufficiently.

"Major Wronski, ma'am! The Captain's expecting you. Go on through."

They saluted, the doors hissing open and allowing them onto the bridge. Even in dock, officers scurried to a fro beneath monitors filled with complex graphs and maps, while technicians checked cabling and tapped at hand terminals.

Captain Saunders was a middle-aged, matronly woman who looked up from a conversation with James Ung as they approached, and beckoned them over. She smiled and welcomed them warmly in English, switching to Polish midway.

"Major Abrahamov was just briefing me on the mission, Major Wronski. Kobieta z Polski! Jak jest jedzenie w Warsawskiej bazie morskiej?"

A fellow Polishwoman! How's the food at Warsaw Naval Base these days?

Sophie took just a second to put on the haughty aristocratic accent of the old Polish nobility.

"Ostatnio bigos nie jest zły. Ale kapitan, jestesmy tutaj w intersach."

The bigos isn't too bad recently. But we're here on business, Captain.

"Indeed. I'm sorry to say that I may not be able to accede entirely to your requests, however."

Krzysztof was reduced to the status of a valet, his charge shrugging off his arm and stepping into an alcove. He was handed her chest rig while she put on BDUs over her undersuit. She tidied up her hair and threw on a patrol cap, transforming from what looked like an off duty civilian crew woman to a naval officer. Earpiece in and pistol in a holster, she certainly looked the part. All business now, she led the way while Krzysztof stumbled after her, half in a daze.

There were Marine guards outside the bridge. Standard operating procedure. The bridge, engineering, and CIC were the three most locations on the ship. There were guards mounted 24/7 as well as on the corridors connecting them. They were only human though, taking a chance to gawk at the blonde officer as she stalked into the bridge.

It was his first time on the bridge of a combat vessel. It was hallowed ground, even naval ratings wouldn't be up here unless there was a reason. He was snapped from his inspection of the consoles back to the officers as the captain warmly greeted his charge. In Polish. His jaw dropped as the blonde responded fluently, even the body language down to a tee. The accent was like something he'd encountered only once or twice before, seen mostly on films, a proper szlachta* . The type of accent and mannerism that looked more at home with a fur hat and Turkish sabre while fighting raiders on the steppe.

They switched smoothly from Polish to English and back, it wasn't unusual in the service. You had your working languages but it was always nice to run into someone from home. You expected to hear one of the big six, Arabic, Russian, English, Mandarin, French, Spanish, they all had the status. Swahili, Hindi, there was a rake of other tongues he'd have expected to have heard before Polish on the bridge of a destroyer. Ja pierdole. **

Major Wronski?! Hadn't he read Captain on her ID? And that wasn't the name either. Kurwa, nie. Dlazczego ja?*** She couldn't be a relative of Admiral Wronski, could she?! Krzysztof began to contemplate whether he'd have a chance to make it to an escape pod before he went further down the rabbit hole.

    Sophie frowned, as did James.

"I'm sorry, Captain. Orders should have arrived from CENTCOM -"

The captain nodded politely but also oddly firmly.

"They did, but they've been overridden. Theatre-wide fleet redeployment orders, effective immediately."

    "We're carrying highly time-sensitive intelligence-"

"I'm sorry, Major. I wish I could do more to help you, but we need to resupply and get out to Ceres as soon as possible. You're welcome to come with us and find an onwards journey at Ceres if you can, but that's all. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to see to R&Ring my Marine combat elements."

Captain Saunders murmured some further apologies in Polish, which Sophie was careful to respond to correctly, but there was no changing what was going to happen. The three of them bowed and made their exit with as much grace as they could muster. James took a look at the pair of them, gave her an exaggerated wink and disappeared.

Sophie sighed once more, took off the cap and shook out her hair. Shortly a senior NCO came along, ticking items off on his hand terminal.

    "Ah, Sergeant."

"Ma'am. Officer's quarters are this way. Oh, is -"

This time she had prepared well in advance. A single tap of her finger on the hand terminal inside her pocket activated a set of changes all at once. The nanofiber patches on his uniform flipped instantly to the silver bars of a lieutenant second class, and his service ID flipped without ceremony to reflect the same - but with a name change, too.

"Lieutenant Ruskov here is with me. We'll need adjacent berths."

The staff sergeant took it in his stride.

    "With me, please."

Krzysztof calmly reached over with his free hand to pinch himself on the skin. No, it was not a dream. He looked calm but inside he felt overwhelmed. Time sensitive intelligence? Theatre wide fleet redeployment orders? What had happened?! His heart was beating in his chest, wholly out of his depth in this mess of cloak and dagger shenanigans that he'd stumbled into. There was an edge to his escort's voice but the captain's word was law, no more discussion was going to happen. The three of them saluted before being dismissed.

He meekly followed the other two out, his blonde abductress shaking out her hair with a sigh. He found himself straightening as a sergeant appeared but She took over again. She spoke up smoothly and Krzy shut his mouth without a word. Having been promoted twice in one day for exemplary service and gallantry, he trailed after them despondently. What in the name of God was this spook planning?

"Nie znałem ze pani oficer mowi po Polsku"* he said, clearing his throat and picking his words with excruciating care.

    "Świat jest pełen niespodzianek, przyjacielu."

The world is full of surprises, my friend.

The poor man appeared to have gone into shock, so she was careful to keep her accent the same as it had been on the bridge. Now wasn't the time to rock the boat with her streetwise Polish. She relaxed a bit as they ascended a few decks to the officers' berths. Two of them, as requested, situated a little way from the other occupied berths at the end of a corridor. The staff sergeant scanned the door codes, let them in and left them to it.

There was a loud creak of metal and before @Nevena Sokol found a tall woman blocking her path. Dark hair was kept in a tight skull braid along the sides of her head, revealing the broad features of an olive-skinned woman. She had freckles across her hawkish nose and two bright hazel green eyes.

"Oye," Mai Shen said, giving a slight thrust of her chin in an upward motion at the younger woman. That stern expression swept over Nevena as if taking stock, appraising the newest passenger taking transit. Thumbs went hooking to adjust the suspenders that latched down her shirt, hooked onto baggy breaches that tucked into the thick mag boots below.

Her eyes narrowed at the small tell-tale signs of indecision and wariness. What was this?

"You the last?" Mai asked Nevena, a slight inflection in her voice would distinguish her not as a Belter, but a Martian.

Nevena snapped out of her daze at the sound of the woman's voice. She quickly sized up the new face, always on guard behind her cheerful demeanor. Around my age, Martian, tattooed - could mean many different things, seems to speak Belter - best not assume she's fluent yet, reserved, maybe I should spare my irresistible charm for now...

Nevena smiled softly. "Oye," she returned. She looked behind her, no one else milled around. She turned back to the Martian woman. "Guess I am." Her hand subconsciously moved to grip a strap of harness on her flightsuit, a defensive gesture perhaps. Nevena endeared herself to Io's quirky denizens, security adequate most of time, talking or bargaining her way out of situations her weapon of choice. She knew she'd been lucky. Leaving Io meant she'd have to start all over again, the thought expressed itself in the back of her mind as she focused on the newcomer.

"Nevena Sokol, freelance pilot and procurer of abandoned materials, pleased to meet you."

She suppressed a smirk at her cute phrase for scavenging, somewhat betrayed by the twinkle in her eye. She decided that was enough to give for now and waited to see what her fellow traveler would offer in return.

Without ceremony, Sophie dragged him into the berth with her - then turned her back and unclipped her chest rig, dumped her pack, took off her cap and tucked everything away into a locker. She turned back to him, tucked her hands behind her back and nodded once, a single crisp acknowledgement from an officer to an enlisted man.

    "Excellent work, Wierzbowski. Mission accomplished."

She brought her hands back up, now holding a gloriously full sealed bottle of thirty-year old Scottish whisky, and set it on the edge of the washbasin next to them. Golden liquid rolled tantalisingly within.

"Let it be known that the Office of Naval Intelligence keeps its promises. This is yours to keep, thanks and reward for a job well done."

He reached out for it, evidently in a daze. She lifted a hand and a finger to stop him just for a moment.

"Wierzbowski... Krzysztof. I want one last thing from you, please. Listen to the rest of what I have to say."

Sophie took a deep breath and gave him her best piercing gaze.

"We - the Office of Naval Intelligence - are spread thin, out here. There are men and women who tirelessly protect the interests of Earth and her people, but the work never ends. We could use you, you and your talents. You will serve your planet in ways that people will never know and save them from dangers they will never see."

She was pushing the boundaries of theatrics, but in she had the ONI patch on her uniform flash, as if it had caught the reflection of the light for just that moment.

"Or you can leave and rejoin your platoon on G deck. I've arranged for them to join the Munroe for the deployment to Ceres. You may not speak to them of what you saw or did today, but otherwise it will be like I was never here. There will not be any negative consequences if you decide to do that."

She stepped back, leaving the bottle between them. The door unlatched.

"You may never hear this again, so let me say - whatever you choose - thank you for helping me today. That's all."

The younger woman struck out her hand to shake Mai's, prompting an arch of a thick brow. Was she new to the area? Rather friendly.

That might get worn out real quick, Mai thought to herself.

Taking the girl's hand, the Martian shook it once with a firm grasp. There was strength in the Asian woman's grip.

"I'll show ya to your seat." she spun, mag boots hitting the deck. "Name's Mai." she called out, adding her name.

"You comin' on as crew or just buyin' passage?"

Nevena took in her surroundings as she followed Mai into the freighter. The passengers looked like war refugees. Nevena wondered if they were being trafficked illegally. Many were Belters, concerned looks on their faces. Perhaps they hoped to rejoin friends and family around Tycho and were willing to charter whatever they could find, no matter how shady. Her thoughts were interrupted by Mai's question.

"Bought passage...with real tumang kafé," she said, sighing.

This trip had better be worth it.

The pilot searched around for some empty seats. "So, where are you headed, if you don't mind me asking?"

The hatch behind them started to close ominously, like a door to a haunted mansion that shuts suddenly once someone enters it. Nevena tried to ignore the sound as it underscored the gravity of her decision to leave the relative comfort of Io.

Real tumang kafe? Now that caught Mai's attention. Turning back around, the Martian gave the younger woman a closer look. Getting real coffee out here this far into the black was hard. Some called it Black Gold for a reason.

"You overpaid." Mai managed to say, but with mild amusement reflecting in her light eyes. Coming to a stop by a section of seats, she gave a jerk of her thumb to indicate where the Belter will sit at.

"Your throne." it was a rather dingy seat with questionable stains on the fabric spread across it, but one had little choice in the matter. As long as it had juice and provided a reasonably safe journey, it would do.

"Me?" all these questions, but Mai replied with a sigh. "Going home." she added, although she gave a small glance to the side to see if anyone else was listening in.

    "Ceres as a start. You?"

Nevena looked in the direction of Mai's thumb to an empty seat. "Well," she replied defensively. "I'm resourceful. 'Sides, bet they'll be plenty more black gold where I'm going..."

Nevena's voice trailed off as she remembered that she planned to pick over the wreckage that the unrest at Tycho would leave. She usually relished her job, embracing the unflattering term scavenger. However, knowing she'd be picking over derelict ships, perhaps crewed by fellow Belters, didn't make very proud. But hunger and solvency were strong motivators...

She dismissed the thought as she strapped herself into the throne, as Mai called it. It had been awhile since Nevena traveled at a hard burn. A long lost sense of excitement came back to her, like the first time she boarded a spacecraft as a child. That feeling of newness and novelty that had mostly worn off.

A soft rumbling reverberated through the freighter, the engines warming to life. Nevena felt the vessel shudder, disembarking and leaving the dock for space. Then finally, a light gravitational force as the craft began accelerating.

"As close to Tycho Station as possible. I know, its crazy considering what's been happening there. But they'll be work for me to do there before long."

There was no hiding the amused snort that twisted the Martian's lips. "Big ambitions there, bosmang." she added, watching to ensure that the girl strapped herself in right.

"Tycho ain't no place for anyone right now. Mormons already are moving into take their Navoo elsewhere." With Fred Johnson dead, that meant that things were chaotic out by Tycho. It wasn't just the manufacturing but the various OPA factions that likely would be vying for power. Or the rest of Tycho's boardsmen looking to get some form of control over the station with a new foreman.

It was dangerous times; much like everywhere else in the belt.

"How you figure you'll get to where you be intendin'?" plopping herself down, Mai took her own seat, fiddling with the straps and securing herself in. Around them there was the groan of the ship as preflight procedures made it rumble.

Nevena admitted to herself she hadn't completely thought it through. She would be flying into a potential war zone.

"Tycho is big," she said, trying to sound reassuring. "The freighter might slip through the heaviest fighting and find a safe section to dock at. Got a feeling this craft might be OPA. Maybe it will be escorted by friendlies once we arrive..."

Nevena felt she was speculating too much. But if worse came to worse, she'd think of something. Always managed to. Then the scavenger remembered that Mai mentioned Ceres.

"Or, if its too risky," she continued. "I could take a detour to Ceres and wait things out there."

She glanced at Mai, silently asking for an invitation to come with if need be.

The dark brows gave a high arch. Pretty bold to make claims that any boat was OPA. Mai knew that when it came to those politics, it was best to simply keep to oneself and not bother anyone. Inaction was the best method of not getting spaced out in the black out here.

"Well, we'll see. Stops come and go depending." and if they end up at Tycho then things just might get hella interestin'. Mai wasn't sure if it was the sort of adventure that she would be keen with.

"Tycho of Ceres. Either is good for a job I reckon." a shoulder gave a shrug.

"Just be careful what you wish for, you just might end up with exactly that." the corner of her mouth gave a perk. Within moments, the engines gave a roar and that rumble went through the entire length of the ship. Before they knew it, Io was just a decreasing yellow dot at their backs.

Who would know that @Nevena Sokol was right? It wasn't Ceres they headed to.

    But Tycho.

Krzysztof wasn't sure if he'd exited reality and stepped into an interplanetary espionage film. You didn't have gorgeous blondes offer you work in the intelligence industry every day. "Well...I am honoured...ma'am" he just about managed to squeak out. "But I can't".

Leaving aside the rumours he'd heard of burnt agents, secret burials, bombs going off, there was a thing called loyalty. "I owe it to my section, to my platoon. If we're going to be going into action again, I'd prefer it to be with them. That's all ma'am". He clutched the bottle a little tighter, afraid she might snatch it from him. He pulled off as sharp a salute as he could manage, "Sorry if I got in the way".

Sophie gave the Marine a neutral look that held no trace of her disappointment, and returned the salute with a crispness her instructors would have been proud of.

"Don't apologise, Private. We made it work. Keep your eyes open, I'm sure this won't be the last we see of each other. Dismissed."

"Yes ma'am" Krzysztof said automatically. He was relieved he was getting out of this with nothing more than a warning. He had no wish to be a camp guard at some acid mine. By the standards of ONI, Wronski was downright friendly, "Thank you ma'am". He did a sharp about face and marched off in as military a manner he could manage while carrying a bottle of whiskey.
